I want to apply for an IOAW benefit

Are you over 50 years old and is your unemployment benefit expiring?
Then you may be eligible for an IOAW benefit.

IOAW stands for Income Provision for Older and Partially Disabled Unemployed Workers.
The IOAW is a supplement to your (family) income up to the social assistance level.

When are you entitled?

You can receive an IOAW benefit if you:

  • were born before January 1, 1965
  • You have insufficient income to live on. Your partner's income also counts. The income of minor children does not.

In addition, you must meet at least 1 of the following conditions:

  • You became unemployed after turning 50, but you haven't yet reached the state pension age. You received unemployment benefits for more than three months. And you have used up the full duration of your unemployment benefits.
  • After turning 50, you became eligible for a WGA benefit. This WGA benefit stopped because you were less than 35% incapacitated for work.
  • You are partially incapacitated (less than 80%). And you received an IOAW benefit on December 28, 2005, before the WIA was introduced.

(WW = Unemployment Benefits Act. This is a temporary benefit you receive if you lose your job.)
(WGA = Return to Work for the Partially Disabled. This is a benefit from the UWV (Employee Insurance Agency) if you are unable to work due to illness or disability. If the WGA ends because you are less than 35% incapacitated for work upon reassessment, you can apply for IOAW.)

The IOAW is only for older employees.

How do you apply for it?

  • Register as a job seeker at werk.nl (DigiD and email required).
  • You will then have a short conversation with the municipality (quick scan).
  • The municipality will call you back within two working days for an appointment.
  • You'll receive a questionnaire by email to complete. This helps the consultant get to know you better.
  • You have an intake interview with an income consultant Fijnder.

What if you are partially incapacitated for work?

The WIA (Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act) was introduced in 2006. Since then, the rules have changed:

  • Were you partially incapacitated for work after the age of 50 (you could still work part of the time, but not all of it)?
In the past you would receive IOAW, but that is usually no longer the case.
  • You often receive a WGA benefit through the UWV.
WGA means Return to work for partially disabled personsThis is a benefit if you can work (partly), but earn less due to illness or a disability.
  • Do you still have insufficient income despite your WGA benefit?
You may be eligible for an additional allowance through the Allowances Act. You can apply for this at the Employee Insurance Agency (UWV).
  • Are you not receiving an allowance from the UWV?
Then you can Fijnder check whether you are still entitled to IOAW.

Are you unsure whether you qualify? Call your municipality or contact FijnderWe'd be happy to review this with you.
