Repaying social assistance

Did you receive more assistance than you were entitled to?
Then you can Fijnder claim this amount back. This is called recovery.

Sometimes we don't ask for the amount from you, but from someone else. This is called recovery. For example, from an ex-partner or from an inheritance.

Below you can read how this works.

Recovery

Fijnder requests assistance back if:

  • you have received too much assistance
  • you received assistance to which you were not entitled (even if Fijnder accidentally paid out)
  • you had loan assistance and failed to repay the loan
  • you received an advance and it turned out that you were not entitled to it
  • you later receive money (e.g. severance pay or inheritance) that applies to the period in which you received social assistance
  • you received assistance as a guarantor to pay off a debt
  • Fijnder taxes and premiums you paid and you do not receive these amounts back from the Tax Authorities or UWV

How does that work?

  • You will always receive a letter if you have to pay back.
  • Can't pay the entire amount at once? No problem: we're happy to make a payment plan with you.

Story

In addition to recovery, there may be recovery. This means that someone else (partially) repays the social assistance.

  • During or after a marriage or registered partnership, partners are obliged to provide financially for each other and their children.
  • After the end of a relationship: even if there are agreements about alimony, Fijnder deciding that an ex-partner will contribute.
  • In case of a donation: the assistance can be reclaimed from the person who donated money to you.
  • In the event of death: outstanding amounts are repaid from the estate of the deceased.

We understand that the rules regarding refunds and recovery can be complicated. Do you have questions or are you having trouble paying right away? Please contact us. We'll work with you to find a solution.
