When are you entitled to benefits?
You can apply for benefits if you:
- lives in the Netherlands and resides here legally
- are 18 years or older, but younger than retirement age
- have no or insufficient income to live on
- don't have too many savings or assets
The money and things you own are called assets.
This could be savings, but also a car, caravan or investments, for example.
You may not have more than the amounts below (2026):

- you previously received social assistance benefit Fijnder
- that benefit stopped less than 6 months ago
- the benefit stopped because you started working
Do any of these points not apply to you?
Then you cannot use the Guarantee button.
When can't you use the Guarantee Button?
You use the Guarantee button NOT ALLOWED if one of these situations applies to you:
- you have been working for more than 6 months
- you have never received welfare benefits
- your benefits stopped for a reason other than work
In these situations you apply for assistance via werk.nl.
Make sure you have your DigiD to hand.

Exceptions
For young people, a search period of 4 weeks.
During this time, we will work together to see if you can find work or training.
If that doesn't work, we'll help you with the application.
Do you own a home and are you entitled to benefits?
We will then determine whether this should be (partially) considered a loan. This only happens if you:
- own your home
- have equity of more than €67.500 (2026)
- receives more assistance in one year than a net minimum wage per month
- you cannot easily sell your house or take out an additional mortgage
If you don't meet these rules, you don't have to repay the benefit.
Application process
This is how you apply:
- Register as a job seeker on werk.nl (using DigiD and email). After registering, contact your own municipality within 2 working days.
- You will then have a short interview at the municipality (quick scan).
- You will receive an invitation for an intake interview within 2 working days after this conversation.
- You complete a questionnaire. This helps us get to know you better.
- You have an intake interview with a consultant from Fijnder.
- During the intake you will receive explanations, forms and agreements for the next steps.
- Fijnder investigates whether you are entitled.
- You will receive a decision within 8 weeks.
- After 4 weeks you can already receive an advance (minimum 90%).
- Are you entitled? Then we'll settle this.
- No right? Then you have to pay it back.
